Ghosts (The Cursed Manuscripts) by Iain Rob Wright

I am a big fan of Mr Wright's work and have enjoyed many of his books which I indulge in every now and again as it takes me back to my teenage years when I read horror books almost exclusively; I don't read as many now but I do like to keep my toe dipped in and Mr Wright's books usually hit the spot quite nicely but Ghosts didn't grip me quite as much as previous books have.

The premise of the story is a familiar one - an internet craze that goes viral but therein the similarity ends as strange and horrifying things happen to those teens who recite the words.  There are the usual graphic descriptions and gory details that one would expect and whilst the first and last thirds of the book were great, the middle was a little lack lustre and seemed to waffle on a bit.

Overall, a quick and easy read that whilst wasn't quite as engrossing as some of Iain's other books, it did hold my interest to the end and my thanks must go to Iain for accepting me into his "street team" and for providing me with an advance copy in return for comments and an honest, unbiased and unedited review.

Hell Train: A Horror Novel (The Cursed Manuscripts #3) by Iain Rob Wright

Manuscript 12.20-03, discovered May 2021 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by teenager, Tom Dutton, who fished it from a stream. Tom Dutton drowned in a flooded basement just one day later. The following text was found left as a voice message shortly before his death.

Clip and Xavi are youngsters in love, with their whole lives ahead of them. Clip, a psychology student, and Xavi, a med student are catching the train into the university for an afternoon lecture. But today, they aren't going to make their destination.

Shortly upon entering a short tunnel, the world stops making sense, and the future suddenly seems short. There are dangers on the train, least of all the other passengers, and for some reason the lights keep going out. Strangest of all, the train should have left the short tunnel several minutes ago. It's almost like the tunnel goes on forever. And ever. And ever."

I think I can safely say that I am a fan of Mr Wright's work; rarely have I been disappointed with anything he has written and Hell Train is no exception.

At the beginning of the book, Mr Wright tells us that his inspiration is Stephen King's The Langoliers and whilst I can definitely see this (and understand because I love The Langoliers), Hell Train is very much an original story.

Mr Wright has a great knack of making the normal develop into something that is totally abnormal and here he does it again.  A simple train journey in the middle of the day becomes something entirely different when the train enters a tunnel.  

With characters that you love and some you love to hate, a plot that is intriguing and different, a pace that is relentless with no words wasted, with twists that will shock and scenes that might leave you feeling a tad queasy, Hell Train is a quick and enjoyable read and one that I would recommend to lovers of horror.

Manuscript 12.20-02, discovered June 2021 in Stoke, United Kingdom, by teenager, Kyle Smith, who found it abandoned on the seat of a bus. Kyle Smith was hit by a car and killed two days later. The following text was found written on an unsent text message found on his phone. There was no recipient.

After a terrible night of arguing, young married couple, Laura and Danny, drive home with their daughter, Rose, asleep in the back seat. Danny is drunk, and shouldn't be driving at all, but Laura keeps quiet about it. She always keeps quiet. There's no point making her husband angry. That would only make things worse.
But things are about to get much much worse.

What happens next will put Laura's strained marriage to the ultimate test as she and Danny find themselves broken down in the middle of the night on a lonely road. Their only hope for survival is to stay inside the car, because that's the only way to avoid the cannibalistic maniacs outside trying eat them."

I have loved reading horror books since I was a wee teenager and whilst I don't read as many nowadays,  I do enjoy a Zombie-fest every now and again and here we have yet another cracker from Iain Rob Wright, who is quickly becoming one of my go-to authors to satisfy my horror fix.

What I like about Iain's books is that it's not just about the blood and gore, there is a good story behind it and interesting and believable characters and although they may not always react logically, it does make things interesting.

Zombie is a quick read but there's a lot packed into it.  It's full of tension and heart-in-the-mouth moments as you would expect in this genre and if you don't like violence, I would give this a miss but for me, I am looking forward to more instalments in this story to see where it goes.

Well written and a great pace, this is a book that will appeal to lovers of the Zombie stories and horror books in general.

I think I can safely say that I am a fan of Mr Wright's tales; they take me back to my teenage years when I read anything and everything that was described as horror or creepy and even now, in my 50's, I still enjoy a story "from the dark side"!

This is a good, short, quick read that has great characters and a great story however, I don't think the blurb makes much sense when you read the book - it doesn't seem to bear any relation to the actual story and the only think I can think of is there are more to come ... which is great but a tad confusing.

The story is actually about 2 teenagers who, on escaping some bullies, find themselves stumbling upon a ruined house in the middle of a wood; what they find there defies belief but no-one sees what they do so they decide to sort it out themselves which devastating consequences.

This is a good start to, hopefully, a new series where we will get to learn what the "Cursed Manuscripts" are all about.
