The House Share by Kate Helm

🌟🌟🌟 Out on 14th May 2020 🌟🌟🌟

Description from Goodreads:

"Immi thought she had found the perfect new home in central London: a shared warehouse with luxury accommodation, a rooftop terrace and daily yoga, all with a surprisingly affordable price tag. The Dye Factory is a 'co-living' community, designed to combat the loneliness of big city life.

But soon after she moves into her new haven, Immi realises that it's not quite as idyllic as it appears. No one seems to know who is behind this multi-million pound urban experiment. And her housemates may be hiding a dangerous secret . . .

Then, as a series of pranks escalates into something much darker, Immi is left questioning whether, in this group of strangers, she can ever really be safe.

And when you're sharing a house, you can't always lock the danger out."

The blurb of this book completely enticed me and I was so looking forward to reading it however, and I'm sorry to say, it just didn't do it for me and I found myself becoming frustrated and annoyed with a feeling of disappointment when I had finished.

Now, don't get me wrong, it's not a bad book, it just didn't have enough going on for me.  The characters, although not particularly likeable, were well developed, the story was unique and it did keep me guessing as to what was going on and what was going to happen but when the reveal/twist happened, it was a little disappointing - I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't what I imagined and left me a little flat if I'm honest and, like I said, disappointed.

I know a lot of people will enjoy this so please don't take my word for it and give it a go; we can't all like the same things otherwise it would be a very boring world as many 4 and 5 star reviews show.

Thank you to Bonnier Books UK / Zaffre Publishing via NetGalley for my copy in return for this unbiased and unedited review.

Hunt for the Enemy (The Enemy #3) by Rob Sinclair

Description from author's website:

"The breathtaking and action-packed finale to the bestselling Enemy series.

The Hunt is on.

They’ve erased his past. Wiped out his very existence. But Carl Logan isn’t finished yet.

On the run in a harsh Russian winter, Logan - once an invaluable asset but now branded a traitor - has been framed for murder. His own firm, the secretive Joint Intelligence Agency, have labeled him a rogue operative after two decades of loyal service. The agency is hunting him down... and they’re not the only ones.

But there’s much more at stake than just Logan’s life. One by one, agents and informants from all sides, all allegiances, are dying. An entire intelligence community is under attack.

And Carl Logan is the only man who can put a stop to it, once and for all."

What a satisfying and thrilling conclusion to this trilogy!

Having recently read the first 2 books in this series, Dance With The Enemy and Rise Of The Enemy, and thoroughly enjoyed them, I just had to read the final part and quickly downloaded it via Kindle Unlimited® and dived into it straight away.

Once again, this book if full of action and suspense from start to finish that certainly kept me enthralled and reading way into the night.  There are new characters and returning ones all of which are well developed and believable; the pace is fast and the plot is excellent and full of twists ... you really don't know who to trust!

This is the third in the series and although it can be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading them in order but if I had to choose, this particular story is my favourite in that it delves into Logan's past and previous missions which adds even more to him as a character.  However, regardless whether you read one or all of them, you won't be disappointed in the slightest but be warned, once you start reading them, you won't be able to stop so make sure you have some free time on your hands 😃

Rise of the Enemy (The Enemy #2) by Rob Sinclair

Description from author's website:

"The JIA [Joint Intelligence Agency] sends intelligence agent Carl Logan on a routine mission to Russia. It should have been simple. But when Logan’s cover is blown, he's transported into a world of hell he thought he would never see again.

Something is different this time, though, and before long doubts begin to surface in Logan's mind as to why the assignment went so wrong.

Logan has never been short of enemies. And sometimes the enemy is closer to home than you think.

Could his own people really have set him up?

The odds are against him. But Logan isn't a man who likes to be cornered. And when you poke a caged animal, you'd better be prepared for the consequences..."

What we have here is another winner from Mr Sinclair and yet another off my to-be-read pile!

Having recently read the first in the series, "Dance With The Enemy", I admit to being a little nervous as to whether this instalment was going to be as good however, I needn't have worried .... this is just as good and had been hooked from start to finish.

With loads of action and suspense, fantastic characters and excellent story, this is a riveting spy thriller and one I would highly recommend.  This is the second in the series and although not absolutely essential, I would recommend you read the first ... believe me, you won't be disappointed.

Once again, belated thanks go to Clink Street Publishing and NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest review.

The Cutting Place (Maeve Kerrigan #9) by Jane Casey

Description from Goodreads:

"From multi award-winning and Sunday Times bestselling author author Jane Casey comes an incredibly exciting new Maeve Kerrigan crime thriller! You've got to be in the club to know the truth.

Everyone's heard the rumours about elite gentlemen's clubs, where the champagne flows freely, the parties are the height of decadence . . . and the secrets are darker than you could possibly imagine.

DS Maeve Kerrigan finds herself in an unfamiliar world of wealth, luxury and ruthless behaviour when she investigates the murder of a young journalist, Paige Hargreaves. Paige was working on a story about the Chiron Club, a private society for the richest and most privileged men in London. Then she disappeared.

It's clear to Maeve that the members have many secrets. But Maeve is hiding secrets of her own – even from her partner DI Josh Derwent. Will she uncover the truth about Paige’s death? Or will time run out for Maeve first?"

I absolutely devoured this book and, once again, I find myself sounding like a broken record in that I haven't got enough different words to describe how much I enjoyed it and despite it being the ninth in the series, it continues to feel fresh with the partnership of DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent being a particular highlight of mine and one which I absolutely adore.

Here we find the team investigating a particularly brutal murder when a body part is found by a mudlarker on the banks of the Thames; the ensuing investigation leads to a missing journalist and an exclusive gentleman's club ... are they related?  Amongst all this is a look into the private life of Maeve and the importance of strong friendships and trust.

This is a compelling and engaging story line and not just a police-procedural; it delves into the murky world of "gentleman's" clubs, domestic violence, blackmail, privilege and power.  I'm not going to lie, it's a dark story full of tension that is all too plausible but there are lighter moments that provide some occasional relief.

Highly, highly recommended and you don't have to have read previous books in the series to appreciate just how good this is but you will certainly want to after reading this.

My thanks and appreciation go to HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction and NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest review.

Shadow of the Jaguar: A Leine Basso Thriller by D.V. Berkom

⭐⭐⭐ Available on 18th April 2020 ⭐⭐⭐

Description from author website:

"Leine Basso is back in Shadow of the Jaguar, an edge-of-your-seat, page-turning action-adventure thriller!

A lost civilization. A woman’s abduction. The promise of unimaginable treasure.

Deep in the heart of the Amazon, an expedition finds evidence of a fabled lost city of gold. It isn’t long before a ruthless drug trafficker learns of the possible find and kidnaps an expedition member, threatening to kill her and the rest of the expedition unless he’s given the coordinates to the city.

Former assassin Leine Basso and her daughter are called in to rescue the kidnapped woman, who also happens to be a good friend’s niece. But in the jungle, danger lurks at every turn, and nothing is as it seems …"

📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖

I'm a bit of a broken record when it comes to this particular series but I make no apologies for that as each one is as good, if not better, than the last and once again I am struggling to find new words to describe how much I enjoyed this book and I have found myself delving into my thesaurus to come up with some new ones ...love, relish, savour, delight in ... all work but mean the same thing in that this book is one of the many containing Leine Basso that shouldn't be missed.

In this, the ninth instalment, we find Leine and her daughter April in the midst of a kidnapping case deep in the Amazon jungle ... sounds straight forward enough however, things are never as they seem and Leine and April soon have to bring to the fore all of their training and instincts to get to the bottom of what's going on and survive coming into contact with all manner of creatures - both human and animal!

D.V. Berkom literally immerses you on their journey through the Amazon and although I've never had that pleasure unfortunately, I could feel the cloying humidity, the mosquitoes biting and hear the jungle noises in my living room such was the excellent writing and vivid descriptions used throughout this book.

There is plenty of adventure, action and twists to make anyone happy but there is also an educational element thrown in for good measure ... I have learnt a thing or two about Shamans and I'm off to find out what my spirit animal is now! [it's a cat by the way 😺].  Although this is the ninth book in the series, you don't particularly have to have read all the preceding books but I would recommend reading at least a few in order to understand Leine a little better as she is a complex character.

Once again, I have not been disappointed and I want to thank D.V. Berkom for providing me with an advance copy in return for an honest and unbiased review and I can't wait for the next adventure.

Dance with the Enemy (The Enemy #1) by Rob Sinclair

Description from Goodreads:

"Carl Logan was the perfect agent. A loner. No real friends or family. Trained to deal with any situation with cold efficiency, devoid of emotion. But Logan isn’t the man he used to be, or the asset he once was.

Five months ago his life changed forever when he was captured, tortured and left for dead by Youssef Selim, one of the world’s most violent terrorists. When Selim mysteriously reappears in Paris, linked to the kidnapping of America’s Attorney General, Logan smells his chance for revenge.

Pursuing his man relentlessly, oblivious to the growing trail of destruction that he leaves in his wake, Logan delves increasingly deep into the web of lies and deceit surrounding the kidnapping.

Finally, he comes to learn just what it means to Dance with the Enemy."

Yet another of the books from my "to be read" pile and, once again, why oh why did I leave it so late to read this ... what an absolute scintillating read this is!

From start to finish, I was on the edge of my seat ... it's engaging, exciting, thrilling, fast-paced and totally entertaining.  Logan is a brilliant character; flawed and damaged but brave and loyal; I was completely drawn into his story and can't wait to read the second instalment, Rise of the Enemy.

If you like Jason Bourne, you will love this and with plenty of action, violence and scenes of peril with a little bit of love interest thrown in, this is a book that won't disappoint.

Belated thanks go to Clink Street Publishing and NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest review.

Strangers by C.L.Taylor

Blurb from Goodreads:

"Ursula, Gareth and Alice have never met before. Ursula thinks she killed the love of her life. Gareth’s been receiving strange postcards. And Alice is being stalked. None of them are used to relying on others – but when the three strangers’ lives unexpectedly collide, there’s only one thing for it: they have to stick together. Otherwise, one of them will die.

Three strangers, two secrets, one terrifying evening.

The million-copy bestseller returns with a gripping new novel will keep you guessing until the end."

📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖

Having read "The Fear" and "Sleep" by the same author and absolutely loved them both, I jumped at the chance to read her latest outing and I certainly wasn't disappointed.

Once again, we are treated to an original and engaging story with excellent and believable characters in situations that are only too plausible and all written at a good pace and easy to follow.

The three main characters of Ursula, Gareth and Alice all have interesting and separate stories of their own to tell and you are left guessing as to how they can relate to each other until the dots are gradually connected as the story moves towards its thrilling conclusion.

A thoroughly enjoyable read and I most certainly will be reading more from this excellent author.

Many thanks to Avon Books and NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest review.
